King Bhumibol Adulyadej was the much loved and respected king of Thailand. He was the longest-serving monarch in Thai history. He was born in the USA in 1927 and was educated in Switzerland. He was an excellent musician, artist, inventor, sailor and sailboat designer. His popularity as king helped him maintain peace in his country many times.

Bhumibol came to Thailand for the first time in 1928. He completed his elementary education in Bangkok and in 1933 moved to Switzerland. He graduated from the University of Lausanne. His elder brother was crowned King of Thailand in 1935 and Bhumibol became heir to the throne. He became King Rama IX following the death of his brother in 1946.

King Bhumibol went back to college in Switzerland after becoming king to study law and politics. He wanted to prepare for his duties as head of state. While studying, he visited Paris, where he met his future wife. During his reign, he was served by a total of 30 prime ministers. He also acted to end several political crises in Thailand and called for a war on drugs.

King Bhumibol passed away in a hospital in Bangkok on the 13th of October, 2016. He was 88 years old. A day later, on the 14th of October, the late king's body was moved to the Grand Palace from the hospital. Thousands of the bereaved public lined the route, demonstrating their affection for their "king of kings". He was cremated at the royal crematorium on the 26th of October.
